OUAT FanFic: Grey

Title: Grey 1/?
Fandom: Once Upon a Time
Pairing: Emma Swan/Evil Queen/Regina Mills
Spoilers: A little bit AU and some spoilers for all seasons.
Rating: R
Disclaimer: I don’t own them. I’m just playing around with them for a while.
Summary: This is the last story in a series starting with Black, White, and now ending with Grey. Post curse but with none of the convoluted mess of this season. Regina isn’t herself and Emma is desperate for a return to normalcy.

A/N: I know it’s been a while. This one is a little unconventional. It’s a stand alone but it goes with the whole color theme of Black, White (my other SQ stories), and Grey. This is post curse, but I have ignored the convoluted story line of this season for something of my own. This means there is no Cora, Hook and no visit to FTL. Regina is in a form you’ve never seen her in before, but then again so is Emma. I do keep the irritating Charmings and Henry makes a strong appearance. I hope you enjoy.

The first 4 chapters are up.

Leaning back in her chair, Emma peered at her best friend, picturing her in wolf form. She could practically see the fur standing up and hear the accompanying snarl. The object of Red’s ire sat in oblivion. Regina’s eyes were downcast and her demeanor somewhat meek. Emma still held out hope. When these two got together in the past, it was always fire to kindling, with Regina emerging the solid victor every time.

The noises of the other patrons of The Rabbit Hole buzzed around them. Some still stared at the spectacle that was the Evil Queen and White Knight while others seemed to not give a damn. Emma ignored them all in favor for the potential fireworks in front of her. She wanted this…needed this.

So, Emma watched and waited as if she were a spectator at a tennis match or the fish in a barrel that was Nascar. Regina had not been herself for some time despite Emma’s best attempts to yank her from her self-imposed shell.

“Why did you invite me here if she was coming?!” Red hissed.

Emma raised a brow and held up a finger as she downed her second tequila shot for the night. It trickled down her throat, scorching her insides before settling in her belly warmly. “I sleep with her every night. Why wouldn’t I want her with me?”

Dark eyes narrowed. It was common knowledge that there were those who thought their pairing was ludicrous or just another strategic move by a woman who would never change her spots no matter what she presented to the world. Red was one of those people.

“Uhh, I need to wash that image out of my brain!” Red exclaimed as she guzzled her own drink. “She’s like a fucking praying mantis! I don’t see how you do it.”

Emma’s eyes tracked from one brunette to the other. Red had made the first move, but it was time for Regina to obliterate her from the game completely. In a few seconds, she would have her Regina back. A better plan would have been to using her mother, but there was an ocean under that bridge. Emma knew she had no right to tinker with it. This was the alternative. A tingle started low in Emma’s stomach and she licked her lips…waiting. Waiting.

Emma held her breath as Regina rose from her chair and flicked dark tresses from her eyes, revealing a near blank expression. The only tell was the clenching of her jaw. “My drink needs refilling. Would anyone else like one?”

Unable to stop it, Emma’s jaw dropped. She blinked, hoping that when she opened her eyes things would be back to normal…Regina would be back to normal.

Regina glanced at her, but the gaze was fleeting and almost unreadable.

“Yeah,” Emma answered. “Bring me the damn bottle.”

Regina’s only reply was a brisk nod.

Emma sighed and slumped into her chair.

“Okay, I know she’s been hiding out in her mansion on the hill, but, what the fuck was that?” Red asked. “She usually takes my head off for looking at her funny.”

Emma shrugged. “She hasn’t been the same since the curse was lifted. I thought it would change when we finally-“

“Uck, don’t say it.” Red interrupted. “But she did get her ass handed to her. Must suck being on the losing side.” She added with glee.

Emma looked at her friend slyly. “It might help knock something loose if you turned up the snark a bit.”

Red snorted. “Me?! The fights between you used to be epic.”

“Tried that. Besides my mother, you seem to have a special place in her heart. She loves cutting you off at the knees.”

OUAT Fan Fic: White

A/N: First, this story is not a continuation of Black, my first OUAT offering. I am tired of seeing Regina get the crap kicked out of her, and this is what I came up with. I’ve taken some liberties with the Regina/Cora relationship and implemented my own vision in some other things. I do hope you enjoy. Also, Rizzles readers of TBL, I should have the conclusion up in a couple of weeks.

Where there is desire
There is gonna be a flame
Where there is a flame
Someone’s bound to get burned
But just because it burns
Doesn’t mean you’re gonna die

You’ve gotta get up and try

Try…

Try…

Even as she sat primly on the plush couch, Regina’s body was fraught with tension. She reached for the cup of coffee, knowing it would only exacerbate her current state, but her need for some level of normalcy won.  Her skin and every fine hair on her body was attuned to the sudden changes in her home. Strengthening a resolve she knew was waning, Regina replaced the cup on its saucer and stood.

Cora had awakened.

For a moment, Regina traveled outside herself and watched her mother descend the stairs, noting the regal bearing swathed in the most expensive of clothes from the old world. Her eyes moved upward slowly until she came to a countenance chiseled from an array of angles. The shark like smile was the sharpest angle of all when it appeared it cut into her heart just as it always did.

Regina turned, meeting one of her deadliest obstacles head on, and just as she had been five days prior she was taken aback by the blackness her mother emanated. A blackness, she herself used to revel in.  As if she were missing a limb, her body actually ached in remembrance of simpler times, darker times.  Regina’s clenched willing the feeling away. She was dirty enough.  “Cora,” she murmured flatly in greeting.

Her reply was a throaty chuckle. “Despite your loathing, I’m still your mother whether you wish it or not.”

“I’m not a child. So, there is no need to pretend.”  Regina cut her mother with her own slashing, malicious grin.

Cora huffed. “Come now, darling. Can’t we simply let bygones be…well wherever they go? I did it all for your own good in this world just as I did in the last. You have to be broken—“

“To realize my true potential…yes. I’ve heard it for the past five days and years before that. Find a new refrain.” Regina interrupted through clenched teeth.

A condescending sound escaped from Cora Mills’ throat.  She stepped closer to her daughter, entering her personal space and poisoning the air around them.  “You will have that simpering boy back and your revenge if you would just exercise patience and a little gratitude,” she hissed.  “Hook and I are just ironing out the finer details.”

As a child, she would have flinched at her mother’s intimidating stance, but as an adult, as she was now, she merely placated. Regina scoffed. “Well, if I were privy to them, maybe I can help speed matters up considerably.”

Swan Queen | Ho Hey (I Belong With You) (by MorsAnglicus)

This is my happy Swan Queen video that will be followed by a devastating one.  I mean, fitting right after the new episode?  We received awkward adorable-ness and in the end received tears and pain.  That’s alright because they’ve made progress and it only sets them up for an emotional reconciliation.  Enjoy fluffy Swan Queen for now.

Oh wow this was excellent!!!

Emma, it’s OK to do something nice for Regina just because you want to do something nice for her. You don’t have to keep using the Henry excuse, especially when it’s so obvious that she was hoping you’d wanted to invite her because you want her around.

Ugh, I really despised Emma during this scene.

Regina thanks her for the invitation, Emma pretends it was through no will of her own.

Regina wants to establish a more routine way to see her own son, Emma condescendingly denies it to her.

Regina is understandably hurt and shows it by being snarky, Emma’s expression screams AHA! I KNEW you were unfit to be a parent and that one little snarky comment just proved it! That’s it, you’ve lost your chance!

Regina apologizes, sincerely and elaborately, for her one snarky comment. Emma turns around like “what could you possibly have to say to me,” barely grates out an “okay” between her teeth, and responds to the heartfelt apology by basically saying well I don’t think you’re good enough anyway, you’re only here because Archie put in a good word for you.

It was absolutely MADDENING. I just can’t believe the lack of consideration and empathy for another person’s humanity Emma is displaying here. Though considering it’s the Storybrooke MO in relation to Regina, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. How does anyone expect Regina to event WANT to do things differently if this is how they treat her when she does?!

Though it was kind of cool to see some of the same Swan Queen dynamics we often see in fanfiction reproduced here. For example, later on at the bus stop Emma uses the exact same line Regina shoots at her about only having been Henry’s mom for 5 minutes on David and Mary Margaret, to express her worries about not being a very good parent. And she acts like she’s not on Regina’s side while alone with her, while stoically defending her when faced with the rest of the town.

I wonder what it is about Emma that allows her to say “Regina is a human being who can change” in front of all the other people, but not express the same sentiment to Regina herself?

Ugh, ALL OF THIS!  The thing that pissed me off about Emma in this episode is that her offer of redemption or whatever to Regina ended up coming off as very shallow.  She invites Regina to the party because it will make Henry happy, and she asserts Regina’s innocence because of her superpower or whatever the fuck it is, but the moment Regina asks for visitation with HER OWN SON, Emma gets all condescending with her whole “I’m not sure that’s best” routine.  It’s not just in this scene, either, although this one really makes me see red.

But we see it in the scene at the end, too, when the Charmings come to arrest Regina.  Emma throws Henry’s poisoning in Regina’s face, even though the poison was not intended for him, and he willingly ate it even knowing that it was poisoned, and then when Regina refers to Henry as her son, Emma is all “NO HE’S MINE”.  The worst is after Regina hits Emma with magic, and Emma tells tells Regina that “I’ve won”, because after this, Henry will never believe Regina about Archie, and he’ll never want to be with her ever again.

Emma wants Regina to redeem herself because Emma knows about overcoming your past, and because it will make Henry happy.  But at the same time, I can’t help but feel like Emma is secretly really GLAD that Regina has apparently reverted, because now she doesn’t have to compete with Regina for the coveted role of Henry’s mother.  Especially given her own feelings of inadequacy, I feel like she thinks that she can never beat Regina at mothering, so she keeps trying to deny the fact that Regina is Henry’s mother instead.  She lets her see Henry, but she won’t let them spend more time together, or let Henry spend the night in HIS house, because if Regina has truly changed, and Henry sees this, he’ll want Regina to be his mother again instead of Emma.  Because really, the level of vitriol that Emma shows towards Regina cannot be explained by Archie’s murder alone, IMO — there are already hints of it in this earlier scene.

It’s so funny, really, how Jen claimed that Regina was selfish in her love for Henry when it’s really her own character who seems to be guilty.

I would like to marry that last comment.

Ugh. This.  I hate Emma’s attitude towards Regina’s relationship with Henry.  I hate it.  I hate the show’s awful depiction of an adoptive relationship.  I hate Emma’s apparent belief that she can just come and take Henry back from the woman who loved and cared for him for 10 years, when she signed away her legal rights to have anything to do with him.

I have many, many problems with Emma, but this is by far the largest.  And she was just awful in this latest ep.  So self-righteous and smug about everything.  She gets that from her father.

Oh I love you all. I’m to the point where I want to slap the smug off all their faces.

heartsways:

I’m having some issues with the concept of “change” as espoused by this show.  Second chances are given out left, right and centre by us all, every day.  And yes, there have been times when I’ve stopped giving extra chances to people because I don’t believe that they are CAPABLE of change.  In a way, I can ALMOST understand what Charming is saying here, given their history.  But this happens in an episode where Snow actually TELLS him that what he SEES isn’t all that Regina is.  Where Snow gives Regina a whole speech about knowing that there’s a woman inside her who resonates with the girl Baby!Snow first met all those years ago.

Well get this, Charmings: SHE’S STILL IN THERE.  Yeah, she’s smothered under layers of hurt, betrayal, regret and the absence of love from the most important people in her life, but dammit if she isn’t still there.

It’s the inability of these so-called “good” people to believe that EVERYONE is capable of redemption and change that bothers me.  Yes, they’re “good”, but only to a point.  And I can’t help feeling that THAT is their fatal flaw that will be their undoing, in the end.  There were a lot of references in this episode to judging people by their past and yes, I get that - it’s really hard to believe that a person can change when their past actions have repeatedly informed us otherwise.

But surely the very notion of “good” is to offer a second, third and hundredth chance for someone to prove that change is possible.  Even for Evil Queens.

This story, however, where Regina is consistently ignored and where “good” errs on the side of caution and allows the past to dictate the present AND the future has been played out.  Beyond the realms of my patience, I fear.  Stop telling me THIS story, please.  Tell me another one.  Surprise me.  Give me reason to believe that in this world - in ANY world - “good” can take a leap of faith that goes against the odds.

Talk about last chances.  I’m sort of at the point where I’m giving this show one.  Tell me something different, television.  Tell me something that doesn’t always fall into the tropes of “good” and “evil” that are tired and played out.  Maybe just this ONE time?  Please?

I’ll be damned if I wasn’t saying the exact same thing over on Facebook. This has followed predictable lines when they have so much they could explore. IMO, Regina is the only complex character because she has layers. I don’t see that with anyone on this show anymore. It is a shame. It’s a double shame when viewers are starting to like “villain” more than the hero. I’m tired of the Charmings’ smugness. I’m exhausted really.
